28 Jan The Best Golf of Bluffton
Before you cross the bridge to Hilton Head Island, you drive through the golf-rich town of Bluffton, South Carolina. Nestled on the banks of the beautiful May River, Bluffton is filled with gorgeous antebellum homes, historic churches, artisan shops and amazing restaurants. However, Bluffton might be best known for its quality Lowcountry golf courses…19 in all! Two of these courses prove year-in and year-out to be the best in Bluffton public golf, the Arnold Palmer-designed Crescent Pointe Golf Club and the Davis Love III-designed Eagle’s Pointe Golf Club.
Crescent Pointe Golf Club
Named the 2010 “Golf Course of the Year” by the Lowcountry Golf Course Owners Association, Crescent Pointe Golf Club offers a striking balance of beauty and challenge that has made it a favorite among visitors and local residents. The golf course was designed by “The King” himself, Mr. Arnold Palmer, and also happens to be his only public course design in the Lowcountry. Arnie’s signature touches are on display at every turn; undulating fairways and greens and creative bunkering contribute both strategically and aesthetically to the design.
“This is one of Mr. Palmer’s best golf course designs”, said Bill Layman, General Manager at Crescent Pointe Golf Club. “There is a lot of elevation change at Crescent Point, which speaks to the incredible vision Mr. Palmer and his team had for this course because the Lowcountry is quite flat.”
Water is abundant throughout Hilton Head Island and Bluffton area golf, and Crescent Pointe is no exception. Yes, you might need an extra ball or two, especially on the front nine. However, the course offers up plenty of scoring opportunities, too. In short, the course design runs very parallel to Arnie’s style of being a risk-taker on the course and making birdies on the scoring holes.
Crescent Pointe is one of the most played courses by golf vacationers to the Hilton Head Island area each spring and fall. If you love golf by Arnold Palmer, you will most definitely want to make a tee time at Crescent Pointe.
Eagle’s Pointe Golf Club
Eagle’s Pointe Golf Club was one of the first signature designs by PGA Tour player and winning Ryder Cup Captain, Davis Love III. The enduring popularity of Eagle’s Pointe can be attributed to the consistency of its conditioning and its playability. Forced carries are kept to a minimum and the landing areas off the tee are generous. The shot values are more robust on the approaches to gently rolling, traditionally designed greens. In fact, the back nine at Eagle’s Pointe respects Love’s reverence for the classic courses of the North Carolina Sandhills, with waste bunkers, native grasses and fairways framed by towering pines.
“Like the design of Crescent Pointe, Eagle’s Pointe features some amazing elevation changes”, said Bill Layman, General Manager at Eagle’s Pointe Golf Club. “This area is quite flat so Davis and his team did an amazing job to build a course that has tremendous character, one that would easily stand out among the 30+ golf courses in the Lowcountry”.
The one hole you will never forget is the signature 9th. An enormous live oak dominates the right side of the fairway. It is visually intimidating from the tee for sure but there is room left to fit your shot. Your approach shot must be quite precise. Lurking short and left is an expansive bunker that is home to a large tree just waiting to gobble up shots. It’s definitely one of the most memorable holes in the Hilton Head Island- Bluffton area.
Like its sister course Crescent Pointe, Eagle’s Pointe has proven to be a Top 10 golf course to play by those in town for a golf vacation. If you are planning a golf trip to the area, it’s hard to beat this Davis Love III design.
