Eagle’s Pointe Celebrates 20 Years

1998 was indeed a neat year.  Lee Janzen won the U.S. Open,  Saving Private Ryan was the most popular movie, E.R. was the top TV show and it seemed everyone was reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.  In addition, AOL was using the all of the world’s CD production capacity for two weeks to distribute it’s web browser on a CD.  My how things have changed.

However, there was also something really neat taking place in Bluffton, SC at the time.  Coming off his 1997 PGA Championship victory, Davis Love III was hard at work with his brother Mark and their team from Love Golf Design, designing and building a golf course to be named Eagle’s Pointe Golf Club.  You might say Davis had a “home field” advantage for this project.  He and his family lived just two hours away in St. Simons Island, GA and his love affair with neighboring Hilton Head Island grew stronger after his 4th MCI Heritage Classic victory, known today as the RBC Heritage, at the famed Harbour Town Golf Links in April of 1998.

Taking their passion for the beautiful Lowcountry of South Carolina, Davis and Mark set their sites on Bluffton.  They were still fairly new to the golf course design business and things got a little challenging at times with the wet, soggy marshland they had to work with.  During the build process, Davis and his team spent lots of time hitting approach shots into the greens to determine shot values.  Davis also took from his many playing experiences in the North Carolina Sandhills and incorporated beautiful waste bunkers, native grasses and rolling mounds to create definition. At just over 6,700 yards from the back tees, Eagle’s Pointe was built to weave through mature pines and oaks, making accuracy off the team a premium. Once on the greens Davis really wanted players to think and so he infused some of his signature design traits of unique and bold green contours.  In the end, the design at Eagle’s Pointe has proven to be one of the most popular and challenging courses in the Hilton Head Island area.

20 years later, Eagle’s Pointe is still thrilling golfers from all over the world.  Tee it up today at Eagle’s Pointe and you will find the course just as the Love’s designed it.
